MY RATING: 5 GOLDEN BULLETS!
Grace Milton's peaceful life with her family on a horse ranch outside Tombstone, Arizona is shattered in one devastating night. Her family is brutally murdered by the notorious Guiltless Gang, leaving Grace the only survivor. Trekking into the wilderness on her stallion, Grace falls ill from the elements.
A young man name Joe saves her life by taking her to an Apache camp where she learns about their way of life and begins to fall for Joe. When Grace encounters one of the Guiltless Gang, her strength will be tested. Can she survive as a bounty hunter, or will she fall into darkness again? This Western revenge epic will captivate teen readers with its ruthless spirit of suspense and adventure and a powerful central romance.
(This will literally be me when I get the second book in my hands!)
"Grace and the Guiltless is a mind-blowing read that will leave you wondering what happens next!"
The minute I received this book in the mail, I just knew I had to drop everything that I was doing and read it...and that is exactly what I did!
Diving into the story, we see that Grace Milton's family has just been murdered right in front of her eyes, by the Guiltless Gang. Grace has sworn to avenge her family's death and soon sets out on her mission, with nothing but her father's colt revolver and her stallion, Bullet.
Things take a turn for worse as Grace and her horse were attacked and she ends up meeting Joe; a handsome young man that lives with the Ndeh tribe, also known as the Apache's. During her stay, things start to develop between Grace and Joe, but she is hell-bent on avenging her family's death and nothing will stand in her way in taking down the Guiltless Gang, not even love...
For me, I'm usually not interested in historical or western YA romances, but I really wanted to give this one a shot, and I'm glad I did!
"She would need to know everything she could in order to take on Elijah Hale and his pack of murderers."
Johnson wonderfully combined heartache, adventure, romance and sorrow all into one amazing book. She had a way of writing that left me anxious and excited as I turned the page. One of the things that I loved about this book was how simple yet detailed the writing was. I've come across books that have paragraphs of big, fancy words, and half the time it doesn't even work. With this book, however, I was hooked from the very first page to the last and I applaud the author for that!
Another aspect that I loved was the chemistry between Grace and Joe. I'm not going to call it a romance because I didn't see it that way just yet. I did, however; see a great chemistry between the two characters. This book is all about how Grace is seeking to avenge her family's death, and I'm glad that romance wasn't such a huge deal in this book.
"She blushed and shook the thought from her head. Focus, she told her herself."
With our main protagonist, I definitely connected with her like I had hoped. Before I started reading, I was hoping that she wouldn't be one of those characters that just did nothing but cry and moan about her life, and I'm glad she wasn't. But, I'm also glad that she showed a great deal of emotion due to her family's deaths. (I've read books that the main character doesn't even cry when she realizes someone she loved has died, so you can see why I'm glad Grace actually cared!) She was a feisty, smart, kick ass heroine and I loved everything about her and I'm so excited to see how she develops in the second book!
With our love interest, I really liked his character. You could definitely describe him as tall, dark, and handsome. He also had that sort of mysterious vibe about him and I was itching to know more. I can't even describe the feeling of love I have for this character. He was sweet, caring, mysterious and all in all, a perfect book boyfriend! I'm also very excited to see him in the second book and how his relationship with Grace develops!
Overall, Grace and the Guiltless is a great YA western read and I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a book with adventure, action, and revenge! Just be warned...this book will leave you in a major book hangover!
